Say ‘Cheese’: The Psychology Behind ‘Playing Up’ to the Camera
In the age of smartphones and social media, taking photos has become an integral part of our daily lives. Whether it’s a casual selfie, a group shot with friends, or a formal portrait at a wedding, people often strike playful poses or flash a goofy grin when a photographer prompts us with the timeless phrase, “Say ‘cheese'”? However, have you ever wondered why we do this? What drives us to make funny faces or strike unconventional poses when someone points a camera at us? Let’s explore the psychology behind why people play up to the camera when someone says “Cheese.”
Why Do We Say ‘Cheese’ When Having Our Photo Taken?
Saying ‘cheese’ is a phrase photographers sometimes use to get people to smile when taking photos (see Figure 1). When someone says “Cheese,” it prompts the person in front of the camera to form their mouth into a smiling shape, as if they were saying the word. It’s a simple and effective way to capture happy expressions in photos. Additionally, saying ‘cheese’ can be an invitation to play (see Figure 2)!
The Reasons Why People ‘Play Up’ to the Camera
There are several reasons why people might “play up” to the camera when having their picture taken:
1. Saying ‘Cheese’ Fosters Playfulness
One reason behind playful posing in front of the camera is our innate desire for social connection and acceptance. When a photographer instructs us to say ‘cheese’, it’s not just about capturing a smile. It’s an invitation to join a moment of shared lightheartedness (see Figure 3). We signal our willingness to engage and connect with others by adopting playful poses or making silly faces. Playing up to the camera fosters a sense of camaraderie.
2. Say ‘Cheese’ for Self-Expression in the Spotlight
Posing for photos also offers a platform for self-expression. It allows us to showcase different sides of our personalities in a fun and creative way (see Figure 4). When faced with the command to say ‘cheese’, we seize the opportunity to inject humour into the moment. Whether it’s sticking out our tongues or striking quirky poses, these playful gestures visually represent our individuality.
3. ‘Playing Up’ to the Camera Makes People Happy
Research suggests engaging in playful activities can positively impact our mood and emotional well-being. When we heed the call to say ‘cheese’, we’re not just smiling for the camera—we’re actively participating in a joyful and uplifting experience (see Figure 5). Acting playful allows us to escape the pressures of daily life momentarily. It infuses the photo-taking process with a sense of delight and excitement that transcends the click of a shutter.
4. Traditions Affect “Say ‘Cheese'” Moments
Cultural norms and expectations also shape our behaviour when posing for photos (see Figure 6). In many cultures, the phrase “say ‘cheese'” or another food-related word like “whiskey” (Argentina), “omelette” (Sweden), or “sausage” (Ireland) is a universal cue for eliciting smiles and playful expressions. It’s a linguistic tool that transcends language barriers, signalling to individuals across diverse backgrounds that it’s time to let loose and have fun in front of the camera.
5. Peer Dynamics Influence Playful Posing
Additionally, we cannot overlook the influence of our peers when exploring our propensity for playful posing (see Figure 7). When surrounded by friends or family who embrace the picture-taking moment with lightheartedness, we’re more inclined to join in the fun. The contagious nature of laughter and play can quickly spread among a group. It results in a cascade of playful poses and genuine moments of social connectedness captured on camera.
Summary
In short, the psychology behind playing up to the camera when prompted to say ‘cheese’ is an interplay of social, psychological, and cultural factors. It’s a testament to our innate desire for feeling close to others, self-expression, and emotional enhancement, all wrapped up in the simple act of flashing a smile and striking a pose. So, the next time you hear the familiar phrase, don’t hesitate to embrace the moment with a dash of playfulness. After all, it’s what makes our memories unforgettable.
