History of the De La Warr Pavilion: Behind the Façade

The De La Warr Pavilion (see Figures 1 & 2) boasts a storied history dating back to its commission in 1933 by the 9th Earl De La Warr and his wife. The pavilion opened in 1935 as a beacon of modernist architecture and a vibrant cultural hub hosting concerts, exhibitions, and conferences. Later, World War II saw the pavilion repurposed for military use; however, post-war efforts reinstated its cultural prominence.

Despite facing challenges due to shifting trends and economic decline, the pavilion persisted, undergoing restoration in the early 2000s to reclaim its former glory. Today, the De La Warr Pavilion is unquestionably a testament to architectural innovation, cultural resilience and community vitality, offering visitors a range of exhibitions, performances, and educational initiatives.

About the Pavilion’s Modernist Architecture

Designed by German architect Erich Mendelsohn and Russian-born Serge Chermayeff, the De La Warr Pavilion exemplifies the streamlined aesthetic of the International Style. An innovative architectural style that swept through Europe in the 1930s. Characterised by its sleek lines (see Figure 3), curved forms, and minimalist ornamentation, the pavilion is a striking example of modernist architecture. Additionally, its bold use of materials, including reinforced concrete and steel, reflects the era’s embrace of technological advancements. The building’s horizontal emphasis and expansive glass façade overlooking the seafront (see Figure 4) also create a sense of openness and connection to its coastal surroundings.

A Vibrant Cultural Hub

Inside, the pavilion features flexible spaces designed to accommodate a range of cultural and entertainment activities (see Figures 5 & 6). Furthermore, they embody the architects’ vision of a dynamic, multipurpose venue. Whether attending a live music concert in the auditorium, exploring contemporary art installations in the gallery, or participating in a community event on the terrace overlooking the sea, visitors can immerse themselves in the pavilion’s many cultural experiences.
