Christian Pilgrims’ Jerusalem Experience in Photos
Christian pilgrims visit the city of Jerusalem to visit the holy sites associated with the life of Jesus Christ. Jerusalem is one of the Holiest cities in Christianity and a popular destination for many pilgrims globally, especially over Easter. This religious holiday is one of the most significant for Christians, as it commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Here are some photos of Christian pilgrims. I took them during a trip to Jerusalem in 2013.
Jerusalem: A Holy City
Jerusalem holds great religious significance for Christians because they believe it to be the place where Jesus was crucified, buried, and ultimately resurrected.
Many of the Christian holy sites in Jerusalem sit within the Old City. Ancient walls surround these sites, including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which people believe is the location of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection, and the Via Dolorosa—the route Jesus’ walked on the way to his crucifixion.
Other important Christian sites in Jerusalem include the Mount of Olives, which is the site where Jesus ascended to heaven, and the Garden of Gethsemane—the place where Jesus prayed on the night of his arrest.
Christian Pilgrims in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem
An important place for Christian pilgrims during Easter is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Old City of Jerusalem. They believe the site to contain the locations of Jesus’ crucifixion (i.e., Calvary or Golgotha) and also his tomb. Many pilgrims participate in the “Way of the Cross” procession, which retraces the steps of Jesus on the way to his crucifixion—as did I during my visit.
Some may also engage in acts of devotion like walking the Via Dolorosa or lighting candles at holy sites.
Overall, Jerusalem is a significant destination for Christian pilgrims year-round, especially during Easter when the city’s religious sites hold special meaning and importance for Christians worldwide.
For many, a pilgrimage to Jerusalem can be a deep, meaningful and transformative experience for many Christians as they connect with the roots of their faith and feel a sense of spiritual renewal.
