“I wanted to let you know that I have gotten a first (76%). I am so happy and extremely grateful to you for your help! I genuinely could not have asked for a better tutor, and I hope that I will get to see you on graduation day to say thank you in person.”

“I just wanted to thank you for all your help during year 2. It has helped. Your blog posts, links to sites, and little nuggets of essential information, and just always responding to my emails. I am very grateful as I feel like I am growing as an academic and getting better at the craft. I’m so happy with my grades. My average was ~68% in Jan, but I boosted it up in semester two and finished the year with 72%, as I got 76% in all three modules this year. I’ve set myself up nicely for year 3.
And I am feeling confident. And I think part of my grade increase is my shift in mindset that I learnt from you. I realised it’s not about getting good grades; it’s about becoming good at what you do and enjoying it. By reading essays and scientific reports to understand how to get better and trying to replicate the style of academics, I feel like I’ve levelled up from January when I was grade-focused. Now I’m consistently writing 1st class essays and reports naturally.”

“Hilarious, engaging, and knowledgeable are a few words that encapsulate Paul as a Professor. I was fortunate to be in two of his modules, including one during the COVID-19 lockdown. He was always able to convey his lesson clearly and concisely, which was easy to understand. On top of that, he would always add his critical analysis of different theories and how he saw them come alive in his life, which is hard to do in an online pre-recorded class. He made it feel like he was speaking to us in real time. I’m grateful to be part of your module. And thank you for all the hours we spent in your office talking psychology.”

“I have to say, this was my most enjoyable assignment throughout the entirety of the course. The scope that we were given allowed me to explore something which I am personally interested in, in a highly creative way. Also, the opportunity to choose our marker was a novel experience which I feel greatly benefited me and others. Well done to yourself and the team for this one!“

“I wanted to say that I am really pleased with my grade and feedback on the grant proposal. Thank you for the help with the grant proposal. The conversations during office hours and the recordings were a great help when forming the grant proposal. Having someone to bounce ideas off of was really useful when picking the grant topic. But it was also nice to just have those conversations. I say this many times, but it really does make you feel like a university student. I am glad I can leave university and actually feel like a student. Also, having the seminar where we got peer feedback was a great help. I didn’t expect that to help me as much as it did. Usually, I don’t ask for feedback from my friends but after that seminar, I realised how much I was missing out on as my friends could give me instant feedback on specific things.“

“I just wanted to say I got a first on my lab report. After 3 attempts at essays and reports, I’ve finally done it 🙈. Thanks for all the support and guidance. You were right when you said to write good science, you must read science and replicate the style of a real report.“

“Thank you for your time this year! I think the NBVA module was challenging, but I think the content was delivered well and it was really interesting. Thank you both for this semester!“

“I just wanted to thank you personally so much for being so understanding and helpful with me and granting me another extension. You do not know how much you have genuinely helped me while I am going through this rough time. I don’t know how to express my gratitude.“

“Thank you so much for all your support throughout the year. Not only were you an amazing and inspirational tutor and supervisor. And during the dissertation, you were also someone I could turn to when I needed support due to personal difficulties. Your time and patience meant and still means a lot to me! I can’t thank you enough for helping me get through 3rd year when times got tough!“

“Just a small note to say thank you very much for being my personal tutor over the past two years and for being a friendly figure to turn to. All your support and confidence in my abilities have been greatly appreciated and made my time in Birmingham so memorable.“

“By the way, I really enjoy your lectures! Also, the information about essay exam preparation and photos on your blog is really beautiful and useful!“

I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to give so much excellent advice on writing reports to our group at the end of your workshops and for reading my qualitative report and giving me advice on that, too. It was really helpful, and you gave me a much better understanding of how to lay out my report more professionally and academically. I got a much better grade on this report than on my qualitative report (a 72!) so it really helped.

“I just wanted to express my gratitude 🙏🏼 Thanks for all your help over the last three years, genuinely all the times you’ve allowed me to drop in and ask Qs about work, the tutor meetings, your blogs and all the rest, you helped me obtain a first class so thanks again. I couldn’t have done it without you. You changed my mentality to make me realise that focusing on enjoying science will lead to the best grades so I will be forever grateful. Up next: Warwick. Keep in touch.”

“I’m pleased to say the dissertation is officially behind me now! I just wanted to send you an email to thank you for the guidance and advice you provided to me throughout the project. Hopefully, now you can take a break from supervising 12 stressed-out and panicky 3rd years–although I may return to you in a couple of years, hopefully, bugging you for references for applications. Wishing you the best with your teaching for the rest of this academic year.”

“I am writing to thank you for all you have done for me in the past three years of my undergraduate as my personal tutor. Even though it has been difficult to have tutor meetings this year due to COVID-19, I appreciate your feedback on my bridging coursework and your checking in on my well-being and providing career advice throughout the past three years.
Also, thank you for providing me with a wonderful reference for my year abroad application, as well as my applications for external voluntary and paid roles; these experiences have and will help me progress in my psychology career, and I would not have been able to obtain these experiences without your input.”
