Interestingly, the balconies and columns on the first floor resemble human bones (see Figure 5), giving the building its nickname “Casa dels Ossos” or “House of Bones.”

Gaudí’s organic design principles also extend seamlessly to the interior spaces of Casa Batlló. Inside the house, each element creates a feeling of balance and amazement. They can also be seen throughout Casa Batlló’s interior design and decorative elements (see Figure 7).

Here, a mosaic of colourful ceramic tiles adorns the undulating surface, resembling the scales of a dragon (see Figure 8). The playful combination of shapes and colours creates a visually stunning display. They are both whimsical and awe-inspiring. The roof terrace also offers a breathtaking panoramic view of Barcelona’s skyline (see Figure 9).

4. Casa Batlló’s Enchanting Lightwells

The design of Casa Batlló’s lightwells showcases Gaudí’s careful attention to natural light (see Figure 10). These vertical shafts are decorated with complex stained glass windows and ornamental motifs, allowing sunlight to enter the interior areas and fill them with an ethereal glow (see Figure 11). The play of light and shadow undoubtedly enhances visitors’ sensory experience, turning mundane moments into extraordinary ones.
