About Casa Batlló
Built between 1904 and 1906, Casa Batlló is a prime example of Gaudí’s unique style, often referred to as Modernisme or Catalan Modernism.
Josep Batlló, a wealthy textile industrialist, commissioned the building. He wanted Gaudí to renovate an existing house on Passeig de Gràcia, one of Barcelona’s most prestigious avenues. Gaudí transformed the conventional structure into an organic work of art inside and out.
One of the most striking features of Casa Batlló is its façade. Gaudí covered the exterior with a mosaic of colourful broken ceramic tiles, creating a vibrant, undulating surface that resembles scales or waves.
Moreover, the balconies and columns on the first floor look like human bones, giving the building its nickname “Casa dels Ossos” (House of Bones).

The roof is particularly noteworthy, with its intricate shape resembling the back of a dragon or dinosaur, complete with colourful ceramic tiles and a cross-shaped ventilation tower.

Inside, Gaudí’s creativity and attention to detail are equally impressive. The main staircase, for example, is designed to resemble the spine of a gigantic animal. Moreover, the unroofed external space or light wells flood the interior space with sunlight.
